Worcester "Prunus Root" Teapot c.1755-60
Please scroll down the page for more pictures.
Handpainted in underglaze blue, this teapot is from the earlier years of the Worcester factory, & is decorated in the popular "Prunus Root" pattern. Unlike the previous example, this prunus root teapot has a spout with a round cross section instead of being faceted.
The teapot has cracked & been glued, & the spout is shortened. There is a workmans mark to the base.
As can be seen, the crack runs around the circumference of the base & down through the body.
The spout is also shorter, probably having been ground down after being damaged in the past.
The teapot has a moulded faceted terminal to attach the spout, but the spout itself is rounded instead of being faceted.
The strainer is of a simple form, the workmans mark is the same as on the previous Prunus Root teapot.
Although damaged & extensively repaired, this is a good reference piece of a quite rare & uncommon early Worcester shape, & it would be a useful addition for any collector of Worcester or Early English Porcelain. |
