Bow European Style Decoration Coffee Cup c.1750-55
Please scroll down the page for more pictures.
Decorated with a colourful central bouquet in the European taste, this cup is not as common as the Chinese inspired copies produced at Bow. The rim is painted with a brown enamel, & note the handle which is the same form as the cream jug listed on this site, & is found also on Blanc de Chine cups.
The reverse is decorated with loose sprays of European flowers.
The design of a central flower with a trailing branch of red flowers, & blue flowers to the bottom left has similarities to wares produced by Chaffers, Christians, & Worcester (see the barrel shapred teapot on this site). In this example the problems in the kiln have caused the central pattern to appear spotted.
In the pictures above & below you can see the extent of the peppering from the kiln,
In the picture below the central flower has again experienced the same problem, with either particles attaching themselves to the enamels, or perhaps tiny air bubbles in the paint bursting in the kiln.
The picture below again shows the peppering that the cup has experienced, an unfortunate problem with 18th Century porcelain, although it was not considered serious enough to stop the cup from being sold!
All in all this Bow cup is a very nice example of a less common European inspired pattern which would be a very nice addition to any collection of Antique English Porcelain. |
