Worcester Barr Period Coffee Cup & Saucer c.1800

This elegant Georgian coffee cup & saucer has a deeply spiral moulded crisp white body, with a deep blue border & superb quality gilding. As with all 18th Century coffee cups, it is very small in comparison to todays cups reflecting the high cost of coffee, it is about the same size as a modern esspresso cup & would be perfect for that use.

Here you can see the quality of this super little cup & saucer. Unusually the gilding is completely intact, even on the high points of the rim of the cup & saucer, which are the most susceptable places to wear. The cup also has the gilded thistle motif on both sides & is nicely finished with a gilded handle.
The relatively simple border design of a rich blue ground highlighted with opulent gilding is very striking against the crisp white body, & perfectly compliments the moulded body.
Overall this beautiful coffee cup & saucer is in fantastic shape & would be an excellent addition to any collection, or a very discerning piece to use today, perfect for serving your esspresso or breakfast coffee in. |
